Soulbound: Champions of Chaos - Symbaresh Twinsouls Archetype Focus
To celebrate the release of the new Champions of Chaos book for the Age of Sigmar RPG Soulbound we’ll be releasing a handful of articles going into details on a number of playable archetypes (or classes) available in the book. You can see our review of the Champions of Chaos book here.
Today, we’ll be basking in the wondrous elegance and mind-blowing arrogance of the Slaanesh Symbaresh Twinsouls.
Symbaresh Twinsouls
You have willingly become host to a Slaaneshi daemon, and wield its power in a twinned existence of hazy half-remembrance and ecstatic exultation.
Among the mortal warriors sworn to blade-cults dedicated to the Dark Prince, there are some who grow to detest their place among the faceless Myrmidesh. Whether it is an untamed and innate narcissism and vainglory, or perhaps something greatly exacerbated by their service to the Dark Prince and the mutation of their pride, there are some who seek something beyond the peerless skill of the Myrmidesh. Drawn by the allure of daemonic power, the seekers mark their bodies with runes of conjugation and offer the souls of six aelves to form a binding pact with a lesser daemon of Slaanesh.
Mark of Chaos - Slaanesh
The Dark Prince of Chaos, the God of Excess, the Decadent - Slaanesh is the Chaos god that reveres in all things excessive and sensate. Hedonism, perfection, nothing is ever enough for Slaanesh or their followers but the pursuit will never end. Despite Slaanesh being contained by the aelven gods via magical chains between the realms of Hysh and Ulgu, enough of its power has eked into the Mortal Realms allowing the Hedonites of Slaanesh to grow in power and become a true threat throughout the lands. Shifting between flawless beauty and unimaginable horror, Slaanesh grows in strength as the folllowers swell in worship, meaning that Slaanesh could soon break free and run rampant as the other gods do.
Core Skill and Talent
Skill - Weapon Skill - As you had seen in the Deathrbringer article, Weapon Skill is the ability to dish and deal damage in close combat. However, do not be mistaken in thinking that the Twinsouls and Deathbringer do the same thing - quite the opposite! Khorne and Slaanesh despise each other and so these two archetypes work very differently. Whereas the Deathbringer is a wrecking ball of violence, the Twinsouls is a scalpel, always aiming for the perfect strike to defeat their enemies in flawless combat. With elegance and grace, the Symbaresh Twinsouls dispatch their enemies with precision rather than wanton hate. Whether with blade or whip, the damage to be delt by these athletes of combat shouldn’t be underestimated.
Talent - Fiendish Reflexes - The daemon with which you share your form has increased your reflexes to near-supernatural levels. When making an Opposed Dexterity or Reflexes Test you always have Advantage (eg. Dodge, Grapple, Falling, Shove).
The Fiendish Reflexes Talent really utilises the nimble coordination and exceptional dexterity that Slaanesh worshippers are known for. This allows your Symbaresh Twinsouls to move fluidly and outmanouver most enemies that you come across.
Available Skills and Talents
Skills - Awareness, Athletics, Dexterity, Enthrall, Might, Worship, Weapon Skill
Out of the archetypes we’ve covered, it definitely feels like a Symbaresh Twinsouls could make a somewhat reasonable “face” for your party. Leaning into Enthrall will allow you to sway those around you to conform to your bidding, whilst your Awareness, Weapon Skill and Athletics would allow you to handle yourself in combat in terms of starting fights as well as finishing them. These, with some Worship, could have you pile up the Favour to lean into a daemonic-heavy build suited towards a possessed warrior of the Hedonistic Prince.
Talents - Ambidextrous, Combat Ready, Contortionist, Graceful Landing, Opportunist, Revel in Sensation
The talents for the Symbaresh Twinsouls dive heavily into movement and covering ground, which give this swift slicer a spin unlike the other archetypes we’ve covered up to now. Contortionist and Graceful Landing especially allow the character to access and vacate areas with ease compared to other characters. This would again leap into a fantastic opportunity for drama, flare and theatre that Slaanesh devotees are renowned for, rather than simply excessive murder and sensation. These characters would show worship to Slaanesh in even their mere movements than simply excessive sensation and violence.
Recommended Role
As mentioned previously, where the Khorne Deathbringer simply points in a direction and attacks, the Symbaresh Twinsouls has more nuance in how and what it would attack. This could act as more of an assassin type character, closing distance towards troublesome enemies out of reach for the rest of the party. With Khorne and Slaanesh being opposed to eachother I would even wager for some fun roleplaying opportunities where they attempt to outdo eachother, further heightening their sense of devotion to their gods whilst also taking into account the price of failure.
So yes, the Twinsouls is your surgical strike against your enemies rather than a tornado of blades and bloodshed. Even further from this, the Symbaresh Twinsouls has a higher likelihood to access and vacate hard-to-reach areas as well as the opportunities to contort the will and minds of those around them through sickly wordsmithery and impressive feats of skill. The Twinsouls would feel like a character designed for a very specific purpose and would prove unquestionably vital for certain deeds and actions - the only issue is that they know it and their vainglory and arrogance may prove taxing for those less inclined towards excess and perfection.
